Key Stage 1: P1 & P2 English Curriculum Overview

At Hope Academy International, our English curriculum for P1 and P2 is designed to enable students to develop proficiency in the English language, which will cover speaking, reading, and writing skills. Our program follows a UK-based approach, emphasizing the acquisition of English fluency and establishing a solid foundation for language skills that will serve students well throughout their education and beyond.

Reading Skills

In P1 and P2, our English curriculum places a strong emphasis on word reading. Students are taught to apply their phonic knowledge and skills to decode words effectively. They learn to swiftly associate the correct sounds with graphemes (letters or groups of letters) for over 40 phonemes or sounds. This enables them to read unfamiliar words accurately by blending sounds according to the grapheme-phoneme correspondences they have been taught. Additionally, they become proficient in reading common exception words, which are words frequently used but do not follow standard spelling rules.

The curriculum also focuses on developing reading comprehension skills. We strive to instill a love for reading and motivation among students by exposing them to a wide range of poems, stories, and non-fiction texts. Through listening and discussing these texts, students enhance their vocabulary and understanding. They are encouraged to relate what they read or hear to their own experiences and make connections. Key stories, fairy tales, and traditional tales are introduced to students, who are then encouraged to retell these stories while considering their specific characteristics. By recognizing and participating in predictable phrases, appreciating rhymes and poems, and even reciting some pieces from memory, students further enhance their reading comprehension abilities.

Writing Skills

Moreover, our English curriculum emphasizes writing skills, including transcription (spelling) and writing composition. Students are taught to spell words containing the phonemes they have learned, along with common exception words and days of the week. They develop a strong understanding of letter-sound relationships and are able to distinguish alternative spellings for the same sound. Additionally, they learn to apply simple spelling rules and write simple sentences dictated by the teacher using the grapheme-phoneme correspondences and common exception words they have acquired.

Writing composition is also an essential part of our curriculum. Students are guided to express their thoughts and ideas through writing. They learn to plan their writing by articulating their ideas orally before putting them on paper. By sequencing sentences to form short narratives, they develop skills in organizing their thoughts effectively. Furthermore, students review their written work to ensure coherence and meaning. They engage in discussions with both teachers and peers to receive valuable feedback and improve their writing skills. They are also encouraged to read aloud their writing, enhancing their clarity and communication skills.

Grammar Skills

Vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation are integrated into the English curriculum as crucial components of effective communication. Students are taught to leave spaces between words, join words and clauses using the conjunction “and,” and punctuate sentences correctly with capital letters and appropriate end marks. They become familiar with grammatical terminology and use it to analyze and discuss their own writing.

Lastly, handwriting is an important aspect of the English curriculum. Students are taught proper sitting posture, pencil grip, and the correct formation of lowercase and uppercase letters. They practice writing digits 0-9 and develop an understanding of letter groupings or “families” that share similar handwriting techniques.

What to Expect with Online English Curriculum

Instead of traditional classroom settings, students will engage in virtual lessons facilitated by their English teacher. These lessons can be conducted through video conferencing platforms or online learning management systems. Hope Academy International teachers will utilize various multimedia resources to deliver the content to our students effectively. Students will have access to a range of digital resources to support their learning. These may include e-books, online reading materials, interactive spelling and grammar exercises, writing prompts, and educational websites. These resources can also be accessed remotely, allowing students to learn at their own pace and revisit materials as needed.

Writing tasks can be assigned and completed online and students may use word processing software or online writing platforms to compose their work and their teachers can provide feedback and suggestions electronically and guide students in improving their writing skills. Collaborative writing activities, where students collectively contribute to a piece of writing through online platforms, can also be incorporated to foster teamwork and peer learning. To develop spoken language skills, virtual language practice activities can be utilized. Students can interact with their peers and the teacher in real time, engaging in conversations to enhance their fluency and communication abilities.

By providing a comprehensive English curriculum that covers various language skills, including word recognition, reading comprehension, writing transcription, writing composition, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and handwriting, we aim to equip our students with the necessary tools to become confident and proficient users of the English language. This not only facilitates their academic success but also prepares them for future educational opportunities and personal growth beyond school. Hope Academy Curriculum Overview

At Hope Academy International, our aspiration is to become the premier school for missionary children in Africa, driven by our commitment to providing a high-quality educational experience to our students. We strive to offer a well-rounded and comprehensive curriculum that not only meets national standards, but also goes above and beyond to support their spiritual development and prepare students for their future beyond school. Here is an overview of the different curriculum programs we utilize and how they contribute to the holistic development of our students.

Curriculum Structure

Our program is structured around the framework and standards of the British Curriculum and Ugandan Curriculum, which provide a foundation of essential knowledge and skills for teachers to create engaging and stimulating lessons. Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on English and Mathematics, as they serve as the building blocks for learning across all subjects. To ensure a solid foundation, we dedicate morning sessions to the core subjects of English and Math, with additional daily sessions focusing on phonics, spelling, reading, handwriting, and numeracy skills during the Primary years.

In the afternoons, we integrate Science and the Foundation subjects of Art & Design, Geography/History, Music, ICT, and Physical Education into our curriculum. These subjects are taught through thematic subjects and termly topics that may have connections with the content covered in English. Whenever possible, we incorporate teaching that is rooted in the students’ local environment and culture, which helps provide a contextually relevant education experience.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to align with the prescribed standards while also acknowledging the unique cultural context and history of Uganda and other African nations. We understand and celebrate the cultural diversity among our students, as well as the various paths they are currently following and may pursue in the future.

Curriculum Subjects

English

Our English curriculum is a UK-based program that focuses on enabling students to attain proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English. We aim to cultivate fluency in English and establish a strong foundation in language skills to empower students for lifelong learning.

Math

Similarly, our UK-based math curriculum aims to ignite creativity, excitement, and innovation in students. It fosters confidence in fundamental math concepts, encourages critical thinking, and enhances problem-solving abilities.

Phonics

To develop essential language, reading, and writing skills from an early age, we utilize a Ugandan-based phonics curriculum. This program equips children with a solid understanding of phonics, laying the groundwork for mastery of language-related subjects.

Science

Our science curriculum, rooted in Ugandan education, focuses on agricultural studies. It prepares students for potential careers in agriculture, a rapidly growing industry that plays a vital role in improving the lives of people throughout Africa.

Christian Religious Education (CRE)

As a faith-based school, Hope Academy International employs a Ugandan curriculum for Christian Religious Education. This curriculum provides students with a strong foundation in Christian principles and ensures their preparedness for national exams.

Bible

Beyond the basics of CRE, our US-based Bible curriculum delves deeper into advanced Biblical principles and explores the life and teachings of Jesus. It imparts knowledge that enables children to emulate the teachings of Jesus, promoting love, compassion, and moral values.

Art

Through our Ugandan-based art curriculum, students are encouraged to express their creativity and develop artistic skills. They learn basic principles and techniques using resources available in their regions, fostering self-expression and interaction with their surroundings.

Music

Recognizing the numerous benefits of music education, particularly in young children, our US-based music curriculum provides students with foundational music skills and encourages self-expression through music. This contributes to their brain development, language skills, and reading ability.

Physical Education

Our online-based physical education program emphasizes the importance of an active lifestyle and engages students in various physical activities. Through fun and engaging movements and exercises, students enhance their balance, strength, and coordination.

Handwriting

Mastering handwriting is an essential skill, and our US-based handwriting curriculum approaches it with a positive attitude and growth mindset. Designed for different learning styles, it improves fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and overall handwriting proficiency.

Health

Our comprehensive health curriculum takes a personal and social perspective on wellness. It educates students about taking care of their bodies, building connections with themselves and others, raising awareness about mental health, and developing resilience to face and overcome challenges.

Key Stages & Assessment

Our curriculum is grouped into blocks of years called Key Stages, with the Curriculum covering:

Early Years: Nursery

Key Stage 1: P1, P2 and P3

Lower Key Stage 2: P4 and P5

Upper Key Stage 2: P6 and P7

Key Stages are specific points in a child’s education journey where they are expected to achieve certain learning outcomes. The purpose of these assessments is to evaluate how well children have met the standards set by the curriculum framework. The assessments involve collecting evidence of children’s progress throughout their learning journey. Teachers gather this evidence by observing and evaluating their performance in various activities and assignments. Additionally, written tests are conducted in English, Math, and Science to supplement the evidence collected.

It’s important to note that these assessments are not designed as Pass/Fail tests. Unlike a simple evaluation of success or failure, the primary purpose of these assessments is to determine the progress each child has made in their learning journey. The results of these assessments provide valuable insights for teachers, enabling them to plan and tailor future learning experiences according to the specific needs and strengths of each child. This student-centered approach to education focuses on individual growth and personalized learning, ensuring that children receive the support they need to thrive academically.

We are delighted to implement these carefully selected curriculum programs at Hope Academy International. We firmly believe in the effectiveness of each program in meeting students’ individual needs and preparing them to contribute meaningfully to their communities. Our holistic approach to education enables students to exceed minimum standards in each country, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve as a catalyst for these future leaders in this extensive online environment.
